Romantic Valentine's Place Setting

Flashing back to last Valentine’s Day to bring you this darling little breakfast (or lunch, or dinner) tray.

Is there anything that says I love you more than a lovely Valentine tray set for breakfast in bed? Okay, it's not diamond jewelry, but then it doesn't cost as much either.

If you were clever, you put your scone ingredients together last night, so while your beloved is sipping the fresh orange juice that you squeezed this morning, you can be baking the scones.

The newspaper can divert attentions until they are ready, hot coffee or tea can be poured into the little glass hottle to be consumed when desired.

If you don't have a sweetie at home, then do this for yourself. (Yesterday's scones, if baked ahead, can be heated for 5-8 minutes in the oven at 350 and taste as fresh as the day they were made.).

Relax, have a peaceful breakfast, and enjoy your day.

Summer's Swan Song

While white is not supposed to be appropriate after Labor Day, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to create a final summer tablescape using as much bright white as possible. With temperatures last week and the upcoming week in the upper nineties (What?!) it’s hard to believe that it is actually September and we are just weeks away from fall. So I am calling this table my summer “swan song.”

I was inspired by these sheet music flowers that served as centerpieces on tables at the wedding of my very musical number two son, and his equally musical wife, nearly four years ago.

Set for brunch, I used white ramekins as the perfect holders for spicy bran muffins.

Chinese butterfly dishes, normally used for holding hot mustard and sweet & sour sauces, served to hold pats of butter on one side, and homemade jam on the other.

Mint and cucumber-infused water is especially refreshing on a hot day.

Mismatched silverware is both elegant and casual at the same time.

The edging on these napkins is interesting, I think, making them one of my favorites. This was my first set of napkins, given to me by my mother when I was still in high school back in the seventies.

White makes things feel cool even on the hottest of days.

The Versatility of Napkins

This sweet little vignette is not of my own creation. In fact, I was surprised to even come across something so clever and vibrant in, of all places, a kitchen cabinet and fixture supply company! But there it was, amidst door fronts, drawer pulls, and hinges. I spotted it just as we were hastily leaving in order to get home ahead of the snow. Had I a bit more time I'd have straightened out the flatware and photographed it from a variety of angles, not to mention turned the plates upside down to make note of the manufacturer.

What did impress me about this little layout is that the "placemats" are actually napkins. Folded into triangles, the folded side flush against the runner, they make for a unique and lovely presentation. In all my years of setting tables this had never occurred to me, but it's an idea I now love and look forward to putting to use at first opportunity (of course I will need to buy a runner to complement the napkins I currently have or heck, maybe a NEW runner and a NEW set of napkins is in order).

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. If you happen to know the manufacturer of either the linens or the dinnerware, please let me know. Not that I'd purchase an EIGHTH set of dinnerware, ahem, but I am curious. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)
