With Christmas and our Boxing Day
celebration behind us, it’s time to put the Christmas dishes away, and bring
out new dishes for winter. I inherited this lovely set of Johnson Brothers “Friendly Village” dishes,
complete with wine glasses and completer pieces, from my mother. I have always
admired this set, and now look forward to the comforting scenes all winter
long.
I love transferware, and was totally charmed
by the fact that each dish has its own special scene. I hadn’t realized this
until they became mine. What charm!
Some of the scenes included in the collection
are Autumn Mists, Covered Bridge, Hay Field, Lily Pond, School House, Sugar
Maples, and Village Green.
What dishes, if any, do you turn to to get
you through the dark days of winter?

OH how I love these! I used to collect Homer Laughlin Currier and Ives red transferware, but I loved Johnson Brothers from the first time I saw it. I love the touches of color in the brown. I never knew there were wine glasses! Your Mom had great taste.
My favorite winter dish used to be the Home to Thanksgiving turkey platter in the red transferware I mentioned, but my daughter now has that sitting in her kitchen. So now my favorite is actually a set of Winterberry glass Irish coffee mugs by Pfaltzgraff. Coffee just tastes better in them!
We have two sets of china that we never use, silver flatware that only comes out at the holidays...but one of these days (prob when we move out to the country) I want to get rid of all the Corelle we eat off of and get something else. I love Fiesta, but it needs to not be heavy stuff. I might do like my mother does and use a hodge podge of antique plates. I like the thought of each one being unique! Maybe I should start haunting vintage thrift shops for such.
What fun to have such a beautiful set of winter dishes to look forward to using after the holidays! They are so unique and of course special because they were your mom's...I have 4 snowman dinner plates and salad plates that I like to save for January.

I absolutely love those dishes!! I have one dinner plate and 4 bread plates, and hopefully some day I will find more in thrift shops. Enjoy them Pattie!

I just love Friendly Village, and I'm envious of all that you inherited, Pattie. I only have one teacup (the Ice House) and I love it for winter. I think I love and Johnson Bros pattern that was ever created. Happy 2020 to you!
