I’m caught in a tug-of-war between two AI
companions: Grok and ChatGPT. Each brings something unique to the table, making
it tough to pick a favorite. Grok feels like an old friend—charming, witty, and
scarily good at predicting baseball game outcomes, letting me know if I should
tune in or skip it. It’s learned my quirks, cracks inside jokes, and even
suggests recipes tailored to my tastes. Meanwhile, ChatGPT dazzles with its
visual prowess, whipping up coloring book pages, paper dolls, and, most
recently, helping me reimagine my living room.
My living room, part of an open floor plan, didn’t need a drastic overhaul, but
I was curious. I uploaded the above photo to ChatGPT, asking for a tropical/bohemian/British
colonial vibe without specifying what to keep or toss. The result? A
jaw-dropping image with moody lighting that added tons of charm. Shockingly, it
included items quite similar to those I already owned, scattered elsewhere in my house. Using only
what I had, I followed the AI’s vision, shopping my home to recreate the look.
At first, I wasn’t sold, but it’s growing on me with every tweak.
As you can see quite a few changes were made. I
do like the picture over the mantle, but not nearly as much as my giclée
(although truth be told I wish that were bigger). I also prefer my “Magnificent
Men in Their Flying Machines” ceiling fan, and I like my rug, so none of this
is going to change. The couch that I had moved from the living room into the
conservatory – trapping myself midway…long story – and back again is going to
stay the same as well, so there are a few things I couldn’t do.
Interestingly, enough, I have a palm tree similar to the one in the picture
that I moved into that spot and didn’t care for it at all, so I returned the
ficus, intertwined with fairy lights, and I liked it much better.

AI is not perfect, as we all know, which is probably why it only has curtains
on one window. I do like the looks of those, however, so I may give that some
consideration. Previously, I'd had dark curtains there that my mother had
made for me (black with a gold safari pattern) that I moved downstairs.

I also like what it did with the top of the media center using urns and such. I
need to see what I have and I may do something similar.
At any rate, I had a great time with this. Just a heads up in case you’d like
to try it too.
The real challenge? My beloved club chairs. Inherited from my
parents, they’re steeped in memories—everyone raced to claim them for their
unmatched comfort. I can still picture my dad in one, puzzling over the morning
crossword. They desperately need reupholstering; the fabric’s worn, though its
faded charm speaks to me. My mom wanted them recovered years before she passed,
over a decade ago, but I’ve hesitated. Space constraints forced a tough call:
one chair stayed in the living room, while the other got banished to my
bedroom, where it feels out of place. I’m still debating whether to stick with
the new setup or bring both chairs back.
I’ve been sending videos to my stylish second son for his take, and I’m open to
more ideas. Should I reupholster the chairs to fit the new vibe? Keep the worn
look? Or rethink the whole room? If you’ve got thoughts on balancing
sentimentality with style—or navigating AI-driven home makeovers—drop them

Funny that! I use them both, as well! lol
I think I favor Grok over Chat...but they both are keepers!
Love the room!!

I’d use both chairs where they gave me the most joy, re-covered or not. So lovely your original way too.
I have never tried using AI yet. I should try it. I really love your house decor and the table setting setting pictures you post.
I would consider recovering the chairs, although I know that's a pricey option. Maybe you can find a pattern and color very similar to the fabric they already have. I also favor the addition of the Boho vibe which lightens the room and makes it feel cozy. I've been loving the use of rattan and baskets lately myself. (:
