The late Mr. O-P often accused me of being too strong an
advocate of “form over function.” Guilty as charged. This may be a female
thing, but I have certain items, vignettes, and corners of my home that are
strictly there for my pleasure. I want to wake up every morning and see
something pretty. In good times and bad times (particularly the last 18
months), I find it peaceful, calming, and often invigorating. I know I’m not
alone. I recently started asking my friends what their favorite spot(s) in
their home was/were and thoroughly enjoyed their loving and detailed responses.
This is a favorite spot in my new room (that goes under dual names of “The
Conservatory” -- this appeals to the Clue fan in me-- and “The Jungalow.”) I find
these monkeys very appealing. It was one of my first purchases when I set up home after graduating from college. When my boys were born, I switched from
delicate accessories, to sturdier ones, and passed these to my mother. She
loved them so much that, even after my sons were grown and gone, she refused to
part with them.
When dad passed away two years ago February, these were the first things I
brought home with me. Their provenance made me smile, and looking at them never
ceases to bring joy to my day.

White monkeys are super cute! Not sure I have a favourite spot in my place...it's overcrowded....LOL
I love "conservatory" for the very same "Clue" reason.
I agree with form over function. My favorite spot has become our dining room. We recently sold my china cabinet to make room for a dining room table, and we have enjoyed setting up the room. Admiring it never fails to give me a lift. Also in my sewing room I have a collection of pretty votives. I put non-flame candles in them (because of the kitties) and enjoy the light show while I'm in there.
Those big, searing eyes...just something about them! They look so innocent. Wow...the monkeys just came back full circle. I can see why they hold a special place in your heart.🤍 Ramon accuses me of the same: choosing form over function. He just doesn’t understand that the form IS the function!!!!!! It’s function is to calm me down so I don’t go off the deep end in here sometimes!🤣🤣🤣 I have several favorite spots in the house, but the best is probably in The Blue Room, formerly known as the library where I like to chill out.

I’ll tell you what I plan to do, you are getting a page in my “My Favorite Quotes“ book. I am not kidding you. I have a book that has favorite quotes from movies, books, television shows, and erudite people like yourself. You will be joining Sherlock Holmes, Einstein, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and a host of others. Pretty good company, eh? You’re right. I don’t know why I didn’t think about it, but you’re right. The form definitely has a function, and I need it in my life.
Linda, there is a Japanese word, boketo, which means to stare vacantly into space without thinking. I am a great practicer of this, and I need something pretty to look at. I completely understand you’re stopping to admire your newly decorated room. Not only do I do that frequently, but if I add one thing to a room, I’ll stop and stare at it. It’s really good to know that I’m not alone here.
Angie, parts of my home are overcrowded as well. Particularly those parts that hold dishes, glassware, and other things for the table. I used to feel badly about this, but in my old age I no longer make any apologies. As long as I am happy in my home, that’s all that matters, and that’s the way it should be for you too.
